What is Pop Up Jazz Club?

Pop Up Jazz Club is a vocal jazz night in Herne Hill — part performance, part gathering. Local people come together to sing, listen, and spend an evening in good company.

What began as a small gathering of friends has grown into a regular event where people feel at home. Some come to perform, others to support friends, and many simply come to enjoy live music and a relaxed evening among people they like.

The room is candlelit and bring-your-own-bottle; wine glasses and ice are on the tables, with a few snacks while you settle in. A live house band carries the music. The evening feels somewhere between a jazz club and a live music night among friends.

Bring a bottle, settle in at a candlelit table, and enjoy an evening of live jazz, local voices and community.

The Music

Local voices, live on stage

Each night features singers from the Herne Hill community performing jazz standards, favourites, and the occasional surprise.

Every event brings a different mix of voices, songs and personalities. Familiar faces, new favourites, and people sharing music they love, supported by a live band.

The Community

Friends Supporting Friends

Many of our singers know each other through local choirs and friendships, and for some, Pop Up Jazz Club has been their first experience of singing solo.

What makes the evening special is the encouragement people give one another. Friends come to cheer each other on, performers support new singers, and confidence grows with every event.

People who were nervous about singing solo have returned to perform again, inspiring others to have a go.

Each event brings familiar faces around candlelit tables, new voices on stage, and the simple pleasure of spending time together.

The House Band

Pop Up Jazz Club started with three friends who wanted an excuse to play music together. What began as a small gathering of singers and musicians has grown into a welcoming evening where local people can perform with the support of a live band.

Helen Staniland (double bass and vocals), Paul Southern (keyboards) and Vincent Burke (drums) accompany every performance, helping singers feel comfortable and confident on stage.

Whether it's someone's first solo or a familiar face returning to sing again, the aim is always the same: good music, good company and a room full of encouragement.

Interested in Singing?

Pop Up Jazz Club isn't an open mic night or a traditional jazz jam session. Most of our singers know each other through local choirs and friendships, and many have been part of the club from the very beginning.

The line-up grows gradually as new people become part of the community. If you're interested in singing, come along and get to know us. We'd love to meet you.

Many of the people who now sing at Pop Up Jazz Club started out in the audience, enjoying the music and supporting friends before stepping onto the stage themselves.
